7th CIFF kicks off in Phnom Penh

6 Mar – The 7th edition of the Cambodia International Film Festival (CIFF) was successfully launched on the evening of 4 March at the Chaktomuk Theater in Phnom Penh.

It was attended by filmmakers and key industry players from the regional and international film industries, including the Minister of Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, H.E. Phoeung Sakona.

"Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts considers this kind of annual film events essential to promote and support the Cambodian film industry," said H.E. Phoeung Sakona during her welcome speech at the event.

"It provides a special opportunity to all movie professionals to share experience in order to compete in global and regional markets."

Angelina Jolie, who this year takes on the honorary position of Patron of CIFF 2017, was absent from the opening ceremony. However, she did leave a message, hoping that "this year's Festival will contribute to this exchange of ideas, and introduce more people to Cambodia as a home for film and art."

During the ceremony, attendees were given a preview of CIFF 2017 with the screening of "Departure", a short film from FLY, a program for young ASEAN filmmakers trained by the Cambodia Film Commission, the Busan Film Commission, and the Asian Film Commission Network.

There was also a screening of "King's Last Song" by John Pirozzi, followed by a performance by Sophiline Shapiro Arts Ensemble.

After the opening ceremony, a concert by Drakkar Band was held at the same venue.

CIFF 2017 is taking place until this 9 March.

Some of the movies that will be screened at this year's CIFF are biggest Khmer action movie "Jailbreak", psychological thriller "Mind Cage" which made its world premiere in Phnom Penh on 5 March, and Oscar-winning movies "Moonlight" and "La La Land".
