7 Nov – Some Johnny Depp fans have been expecting this for a while since he's been involved in lawsuit after lawsuit in recent years, but to hear the actor admit it himself is still shocking, especially to Potterheads.

The "Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald" star has posted on Instagram a statement regarding his status in the film franchise, revealing that he will not be returning as the titular wizard he played in the second "Fantastic Beasts" movie.

"In light of recent events, I would like to make the following short statement," he wrote.

"Firstly, I would like to thank everybody who has gifted me with their love and support. I have been humbled and moved by your many messages of love and concern, particularly over the last few days.

"Secondly, I wish to let you know that I have been asked to resign by Warner Bros. from my role as Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts and I have respected and agreed to that request."

He added that he will continue to fight to tell the truth, despite the "surreal judgement" of the UK court, and said that he intends to prove the allegations against him are false. This refers to his libel lawsuit against The Sun, whom he sued for a 2018 article that called him a "wife beater". The High Court of Justice earlier this week ruled against him in the lawsuit but the actor is planning to appeal the decision.

Warner Bros has also confirmed Depp's departure, Variety reported, and stated that the role will be recast. Originally slated for release in November 2021, the yet-to-be-officially-titled "Fantastic Beasts 3" have been rescheduled to summer 2022, though no exact release date has been set.
